Entrepreneur Elon Musk and his newly founded AI company, named xAI, have unveiled a new AI chatbot called Grok.
The company claims that Grok can surpass the capabilities of OpenAI’s original ChatGPT version in a variety of scholarly benchmarks.
The team at xAI has shared their vision of Grok as a tool meant to augment human capabilities, particularly in the realms of research and progress. In a recent announcement on the social platform X (previously known as Twitter), they detailed their ambitions for Grok’s role in supporting innovation.
According to Musk and the team at xAI, Grok possesses a distinctive edge by being integrated with real-time information through the X platform. They highlight that Grok is designed to engage with edgier queries which are typically declined by other AI platforms. The bot is touted to have a sharp sense of humor and a dash of nonconformity, appealing to users who appreciate wit in their interactions.
Grok’s underlying technology, referred to as Grok-1, has reportedly outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 in numerous educational evaluations in fields such as mathematics and computer programming. xAI’s statements suggest, however, that Grok has not yet managed to exceed the performance of OpenAI’s latest, more sophisticated model, GPT-4, which benefits from more extensive training datasets and computational power. Nevertheless, xAI takes pride in the strides they’ve made in efficiently training large language models (LLMs).
The company has announced that Grok will be available through a subscription to X Premium Plus at a monthly rate. Initially, it is being rolled out to a select audience within the United States.
As a product still in its beta phase, Grok is expected to undergo rapid improvements. In parallel, the xAI team plans to gradually enhance the safety features of the AI to prevent its misuse.
In a related context, a report has indicated that the valuation of the social platform X has decreased to less than half of the $44 billion acquisition price paid by Musk.
XAi emphasizes their commitment to the responsible development of AI technology, with the intention of maximizing its positive impact on scientific and economic sectors, while diligently working to mitigate potential risks associated with harmful uses of AI. The launch of Grok marks a significant step for xAI, which was established by Musk earlier in the year.
