OpenAI has opened the doors for anyone to craft their own version of ChatGPT
Offering a no-code solution for developing tailored AI agents for a variety of tasks. This new feature is currently exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
A year after ChatGPT’s debut, OpenAI has unveiled a new platform that allows for the creation of specialized ChatGPT versions, all without the need for any programming skills.
In the near future, these AI agents, referred to as GPTs by OpenAI, will be available via the GPT Store, although specifics about the store’s design and functionality remain limited at this time. OpenAI has plans to compensate creators based on the usage of their GPTs, although the exact compensation details have not been disclosed. These GPTs will be accessible to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and OpenAI’s enterprise clients, who will have the option to create GPTs for exclusive internal use by their staff.
The announcement of custom GPTs took place at DevDay, OpenAI’s inaugural developer conference in San Francisco. At this event, OpenAI also revealed a more powerful yet less expensive GPT-4, reduced pricing for developers integrating its models into their applications, and the impressive milestone of ChatGPT reaching 100 million weekly users.
“Ever since we launched ChatGPT, there has been a demand for more customizable options to suit the varied ways people use it,” OpenAI stated. While Custom Instructions were introduced in July to allow for some level of personalization, the call for greater control persisted. Many advanced users have been manually entering a list of intricate prompts and instructions into ChatGPT. Now, GPTs can automate this process.”
In a recent demonstration of the GPT platform by OpenAI, a bot named “Creative Writing Coach” evaluated a writing sample from a PDF. In another instance, a GPT was quickly created to assist participants in navigating DevDay. This bot, automatically named “Event Navigator,” was given a profile picture generated by DALL-E and was programmed with the event’s schedule from a PDF to provide informed responses.
OpenAI’s interface allows creators to define how a GPT should interact with users before it goes live. The Event Navigator I observed was programmed to be efficient and helpful, avoiding any scheduling mishaps, and OpenAI generated several conversation prompts for it, such as “What’s the first session today?”
Each GPT can be enabled with web browsing capabilities, access to DALL-E, and use of OpenAI’s Code Interpreter tool for software development and execution. The builder interface includes a “Knowledge” section for uploading specific data, like the DevDay schedule. Additionally, with a feature named Actions, OpenAI is allowing GPTs to connect to external services to retrieve data from emails, databases, and more, beginning with integrations like Canva and Zapier.
With the launch of custom GPTs, OpenAI is now in direct competition with other AI bot platforms such as Character.AI and Meta, which has recently introduced various AI personas across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. OpenAI is marketing its platform as more utility-driven compared to its rivals, focusing less on creating bots with human-like personas, though it does not discourage the development of such GPTs.
Creators will not have access to the conversations people have with their GPTs, and it’s not yet clear what level of usage data they will receive. OpenAI intends to monitor the activity to prevent misuse, such as fraud, hate speech, and explicit content. When the GPT Store eventually launches, OpenAI will only accept agents from creators who have verified their identities. Initially, GPTs will be shared through web links.
In the end, OpenAI views its GPT platform as a step towards achieving its ultimate ambition: the creation of an artificial general intelligence (AGI). Limiting access to paid subscribers is also expected to boost the company’s rapidly growing revenue as it seeks an investment valuation of up to $90 billion.
