OpenAI’s ChatGPT voice chat feature, initially exclusive to Plus and Enterprise subscribers since its September launch, is now expanding to free users. This update enables real-time voice interactions with ChatGPT on both Android and iOS devices. Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, recently announced this rollout on X, marking a significant step in accessibility for mobile users.

Acknowledging the potential risks associated with the capability to create lifelike synthetic voices from minimal speech samples, OpenAI opted to focus ChatGPT’s voice feature solely on facilitating conversations. This functionality is powered by a text-to-speech model that produces human-like audio from text and brief speech samples, developed in collaboration with voice actors to offer a choice of five distinct voices.

While some users have gained access to voice conversations, many on Android, are yet to receive the feature. Its availability to all accounts may take some time, and it remains uncertain whether users need to opt in to access it. However, during the initial rollout of voice chats, paid subscribers had to activate it through Settings > New Features.

Following his departure as President of OpenAI, Brockman announced the broader availability of this feature. His resignation occurred alongside the board’s decision to dismiss CEO Sam Altman, causing turmoil within the company. Many senior staff members resigned in protest, and others threatened to leave if Altman wasn’t reinstated. Ultimately, OpenAI reversed its decision and reinstated both Altman and Brockman to their previous positions.

To use voice chat in ChatGPT:

  1. Launch the ChatGPT app and sign in.
    2. Go to Settings.
    3. Choose New Features.
    4. Enable voice conversations.
    5. Select your desired voice by clicking the headphone icon at the top-right.
    6. Press the blue headset icon and allow permissions for live activity.
    7. Wait for ChatGPT’s prompt to begin speaking.
    8. If the voice chat option is missing, it may not be available for your account yet.
