Quickly Create Your GPT in Just 5 Minutes: A Simple and Fast Guide

OpenAI recently launched a new feature that allows anyone to build a customized version of ChatGPT, known as GPTs.

These GPTs are tailored to individual or corporate needs and can be created swiftly using the GPT builder tool. This development is a significant leap from the initial capabilities of ChatGPT, which amazed the world with its efficiency in tasks like summarizing articles and planning travel itineraries.

What are GPTs?

GPTs are essentially personalized ChatGPT versions. To create one, users simply describe their requirements in plain English to the GPT builder, and the tool manages the rest. For instance, you could ask for a chatbot that provides fun facts about otters. Furthermore, these custom GPTs can browse the web, generate images with DALLE·3, and execute code.

Two key advancements set the GPT builder apart from the customization options available to ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise users. Firstly, it allows the creation of multiple custom GPTs, offering flexibility to switch between different chatbots for various tasks. Secondly, it provides an option to upload knowledge source files directly, streamlining the process of feeding information to the AI.

However, it’s important to be cautious with sensitive information. OpenAI offers privacy controls, including opting out of model training, to protect your data like chat history and knowledge files. Despite these measures, users should be aware of potential risks associated with data breaches, especially in the early stages of using this feature.

To create your custom ChatGPT using OpenAI’s GPT builder, follow these streamlined steps:

  1. Navigate to chat.openai.com and sign in.
  2. Find and click on ‘Explore’ in the sidebar.
  3. Select ‘Create a GPT’ to start the process.
  4. On the ‘Create’ page, type your instructions into the message box. Engage with the GPT builder through conversation to refine your desired outcomes.
  5. Use the ‘Configure’ option for more advanced customizations. This includes renaming your chatbot, enhancing instructions, uploading knowledge sources, and setting up specific actions.
  6. After configuring, hit ‘Save’ and decide how you wish to share your newly created custom GPT.
  7. Finalize the process by clicking ‘Confirm’.

Now, let’s delve into the more intricate aspects of utilizing GPTs.

1. Log in to your OpenAI account

To begin using OpenAI’s services, ensure you possess either a ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise subscription. If you already have an account of this type, simply select the ‘Log in’ option to commence your interactions.

2. Create your GPT

  1. In the sidebar, click Explore.
  2. Click Create a GPT.

The GPT builder features a dual-display interface: on one side, the Create panel is where you input prompts to construct your chatbot; on the other, the Preview panel enables you to engage with your chatbot during its development, facilitating a smoother process of refinement.

3. Type your commands into the message box on the Create page, and then hit Enter or Return.

Following this, the GPT builder will offer some recommendations based on your input, such as a chatbot name, a profile picture, and some initial conversation prompts.

4. You have the option to either accept the GPT builder’s initial recommendations or request modifications. Remember, even if you accept the initial suggestions, you can adjust them later.

5. The GPT builder will then ask for more detailed instructions to further tailor your chatbot’s responses.

If you’re uncertain about specific changes, a good approach is to experiment with your chatbot in the Preview panel. Engage with it as you normally would and observe its replies. This interaction can guide your adjustments. For instance, if the chatbot gives overly long answers, you might instruct the builder to keep responses brief. Similarly, if it provides information without sources, you could direct it to consistently cite references.

Keep fine-tuning your instructions until the chatbot consistently delivers the type of responses you envision for the final product.

3. Configure your GPT

Select the Configure option.

As usual, you have the option to alter your chatbot’s name and description. To adjust the more sophisticated settings, follow these steps:

Profile picture:

Click on the profile picture section. Here, you have the choice to upload a personal image or use DALLE·3 to create one automatically. If you have specific requirements for the image DALLE·3 should generate, select Create and input your directives.

Instructions: Modify the guidelines provided by the GPT builder, or add new instructions and rules to define how your chatbot should or should not respond.

Conversation starters:

To manage conversation starters, click the ‘X’ next to any prompt to delete it. Alternatively, you can introduce a new prompt by typing it into an available ‘Conversation Starters’ field.

Knowledge Settings:

If you wish your chatbot to base its responses on your company’s style guide, or perhaps you want it to incorporate insights from PDFs of customer personas for added context, select ‘Upload files’. Here, you can add any pertinent documents for your chatbot to refer to.

Capabilities:

Your chatbot comes equipped with the ability to surf the web and generate AI-powered images. If you’d like it to have programming or data analysis capabilities, select the ‘Code Interpreter’ option.

Actions:

To enable your chatbot to gather information from external sources or perform tasks beyond the ChatGPT platform, choose ‘Add Actions’. This allows you to define how your chatbot should utilize any external third-party APIs.

Saving Your GPT

Once satisfied with your chatbot, click ‘Save’. (If updating an existing custom GPT, select ‘Update’.)

Decide on the sharing settings for your custom chatbot: choose between ‘Only me’, ‘Only people with a link’, or ‘Public’. For those with an Enterprise plan, ‘Anyone at [your company]’ is also an option.

After making your selection, click ‘Confirm’.

Your ChatGPT and any custom GPTs you create will be accessible from the side panel on the ChatGPT home page. Simply click on the GPT you wish to use and interact with it as usual.

For example, here’s a custom chatbot I designed to craft alternative text descriptions for images in a Zapier blog article.

Sharing Your GPT

If you’ve set your custom GPT to be accessible to others, follow these steps for easy sharing:

Navigate to the sidebar and select ‘Explore’.

Choose the GPT you wish to share.

Click on the downward-facing caret (∨) located next to your chatbot’s name.

Select ‘Copy link’ to obtain a shareable link.

That’s it!!
